Melody Craighead came to work for City of Fulton after selling the family business, Maupin Funeral Home. While the move called for a new skill set, it proved rewarding.
“It was very rewarding for me to do the family business. I was a fourth generation (owner). The business changed after my father died,” she said. “It’s good now to be able to do this. I love the people here. I wish I had applied for it a long time earlier. Those are probably my two favorite things: being able to work for my family business and then do this.”
Melody started with City of Fulton just over a year ago in the Finance Department as Collection Clerk. She handles bank reconciliation, monthly invoicing for Legends Rec-Plex memberships and hanger rentals at Elton Hensley Memorial Airport as well as solid waste billing. She also helps with larger projects for the department, such as the annual audit.
“There’s just always something going on,” Melody said. “That’s better than being bored. There are always deadlines to meet and things that you have to get done throughout the month. Then, it’s time to turn around and do it again. That would be my biggest thing that I didn’t realize, it is so fast-paced.”
Working in finance means Melody is learning a new skill, which she’d previously been made to feel she couldn’t do. Melody has developed new skills as part of the Finance Department and enjoys the support she receives from the team.
“I’m teaching an old dog new tricks, something that I haven’t done, but everyone is being very patient with me and they’re guiding me on it,” she said. “I just really like the challenge. I didn’t think I was smart enough to do any of this, and yet I’m accomplishing it. It’s taking me a little longer, but I’m getting there. I just couldn’t be happier. I wish I applied a long time ago.”
Outside of work, Melody enjoys shopping and visiting the ocean. She also spends time with her husband, kids, 17 grandkids, and grand dogs.
