For Engineering Tech Steve Gohring, working for the City of Fulton is a way of giving back to his hometown.
“I was a drafting student, and the position came up, which had a lot of drafting to it. I was assistant to the technician at the time, so I got a lot of board-time drafting,” he said. “Over time, the more experience you get, I got directed into the surveying aspect. When I left the city the first time, I went to work for an engineering company in Columbia, and that’s where I picked up all my experience with actual surveying, deed writing, research, stakeout, and construction.”
After 17 years working in Columbia, Steve returned to the City of Fulton Engineering Division, where he’s now been for almost 22 years.
“It really worked well to be in my hometown,” he said. “I felt comfortable here.”
As an engineering tech, Steve supports the Public Works Department by developing plans for projects around the city. For instance, upcoming plans for walking trails, sewer work, and street overlay projects.
Steve follows a project from start to finish, which he said is the best part.
“I really enjoy the fact that we’re about 70% inside and then about 30% outside,” he said. “In Fulton, we take it from beginning to end pretty much. We get assigned a task, and it’s up to us to research, to collect the information, put it together, get the contracts executed and managed. It’s yours from beginning to end, almost, it feels like. There are a lot of important people to make decisions, but it’s our baby.”
Outside of work, Steve is the father of four boys, with the oldest in his 30s and the youngest in high school, as well as one grandchild.
“For a while there, I considered myself the team bus driver because we would always have to travel to take the kids to wherever they were playing,” he said. “Once they were in high school, we were always following Friday night football. Two days a week, they played basketball and baseball. That was always, I think, the funnest part of life outside of work.”
