Why are the fire hydrant tops painted different colors around town?

The tops of the Fire Hydrants are painted different colors to color code the capacity of that hydrant. Each color represents gallons per minute range so we have an idea of what we can expect from that hydrant. This also helps keep our fire insurance rates down.
